DriveClub is getting a surprise new hardcore mode, as part of a forthcoming update in February.

Revealed by Evolution's Game Director Paul Rustchynsky on Twitter, enabling the new 'Hardcore Handling' setting will switch off all assists, so you'll no longer be able to rely on the traction control and stability control. Taming DriveClub's supercars in the wet is about to get trickier, as shown in an official video released by Evolution featuring the feisty Ferrari FXX K being put through its paces on a wet circuit.

And if you're worried the Hardcore setting will be too difficult for you to handle, you'll still be able to revert back to the default settings. One of our criticisms directed at DriveClub was the lack of options to adjusts the driving settings, so the new Hardcore mode is a very welcome addition indeed. Longtime players will no doubt lap up the new challenge offered from the Hardcore mode, which could also reveal some of the hidden depths in DriveClub's physics engine.

It's all part of Evolution's long term plan to develop DriveClub as a platform and keep it relevant well into 2016. In addition to the Hardcore mode, February's update will add a wealth of new features – Evolution recently revealed you'll soon be able to play using any of the photo mode's filters if you fancy racing in black and white, plus new cars and tours are also on the way. Look closely at the embedded video released by Evolution and you can spot what is clearly a Nissan Skyline R34 in the distance.

Don't forget this year will also see the release of some long-awaited new city tracks in DriveClub. One of the PS4's finest racers is about to get even better.
