Game: Drive Club

Platform: PS4

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Release Date: 07/10/2014

After being curiously absent at E3 this year, the long-delayed DriveClub had a star showing at Gamescom, as members of Evolution Studios took to the stage in a live demonstration of its integral club social mechanics. New details were also announced on the role of the DriveClub companion app, which can be used to keep up to date on the progress of your club, friends and rivals activity, as well as the ability to watch your friends play real time in streamed live races.

More impressive was the visual fidelity harnessed from the PS4 hardware on display. Of course, this isn't really anything new: we already know that DriveClub is shaping up to be quite the stunner, as is evident from the preposterously detailed cars and tracks. However, Evolution used Gamescom to showcase a previously unseen element: thes dynamic weather system. It's safe to say Forza Horizon 2 should probably keep an eye on its rear view mirror.

Heavy rain storms shrouded the player's view convincingly, and Evolution's extraordinary attention to detail was plain to see: at one point the game was paused whilst the camera moved around in what was presumably a demonstration of the game's photo mode to show how individual rain droplets will form dynamic puddles that will affect the surface of the road and therefore the handling, before panning up to reveal  the realistically rendered clouds. Now that's dedication.

Weather can also fully controlled when setting up a race, with options to choose exactly when a storm will erupt during the course of the race. So you can have a race start off sunny before being hit by a severe storm, only to clear up during the final stages of the race in a mad cap dash to the finish, for example.

Of course, it wouldn't be Gamescom without an obligatory trailer, and this latest look at DriveClub showcases a few previously unannounced cars. Chief new addition was the mighty McLaren P1, a hybrid supercar that's becoming an increasingly common sight in contemporary racing games. That garish green and black team livery Evolution chose to paint the British brute with is probably not quite so common, though. Other previously unseen cars shown in the trailer include the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Ferrari California, Volkswagen Golf and Mini John Cooper Works GP.

We'll have plenty of gorgeous DriveClub Gamescom gameplay videos for you to gorge on, but in the meantime you can feast your eyes on the latest screenshot gallery below.
