DiRT 4 aims to appease the masses with the hardcore simulation and the more accessible “gamer” handling.

We focus on the former in our latest DiRT 4 preview video which sees us visit the famous British rallycross circuit of Lydden Hill. We couldn’t help but walk the track with our camera to get a good feel of the surface and turns which were usually either surprisingly bumpy or smooth depending on surface type.

Our initial findings using a wheel on the simulation settings on rallycross were positive, the rallycross cars were very challenging to get to grips with as expected. On dirt we felt you really need to throw the car in to maintain a decent speed which created a surprising amount of oversteer.

We also jump on to some rally gameplay using a controller where we learned very early on that you need to exercise caution particularly when braking. Indeed, when coming from the “Gamer” to the simulation setting you really need to respect the cars much more and dab the accelerator and brakes rather than stamp on them as we could do the more accessible setting.

You can view our coverage of DiRT 4’s simulation handling setting in the video below.
