In a shock announcement, the head of Criterion Games – the developers of such critically-acclaimed games like Burnout: Paradise and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit – revealed that his studio won't be making a new racing game any time soon.

As stated in a series of tweets, Criterion boss Alex Ward revealed that – in response to a number of fans requesting a new Burnout and Need for Speed game – the studio will abandon the genre, decreeing "after over a decade of making racing games it's time to make something new."

This does come as quite a shock to us here at Team VVV – not only does Criterion have an impressive back catalogue of racing titles to call upon (as well as Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, the Guildford-based studio also developed the Burnout games, as well as the RedLine motorbike racing title for the Sega Dreamcast in 1998), but Criterion was officially going to be the main studio that made NFS titles for EA.

Now, though, it seems that EA Gothenburg will now be responsible for the Need for Speed franchise, given it's currently developing an upcoming title for the series.

All is not lost, though – Alex Ward did mention on his Twitter page that the Burnout series may make a return, stating "when it feels right we will make another one."
