Gran Turismo developer Polyphony Digital has identified General Motors’s Vision Gran Turismo car as the Chaparral 2X.

Previously thought to have been a Corvette concept car, the new Vision Gran Turismo design study has been created in collaboration with GM Design and Chaparral Cars racing team founder Jim Hall, and will be brought to Gran Turismo 6 in an update scheduled for “the holiday season”.

In a fitting tribute to Chaparral’s history as an innovator in motorsport, the 2X VGT will be a "far-reaching machine" that will showcase what General Motors's design team can accomplish "when they are cut loose" from any technical or regulation-derived constraints.

Little else is known about the Chaparral 2X Concept Vision Gran Turismo at this moment, though more details are expected to be revealed when the full size mock-up is displayed at the Los Angeles Auto Show next week.

Chaparral Cars was an American racing team that competed in various motorsports championships from 1957 to 1982. The outfit is perhaps most famous for its pioneering 2E and 2J racing cars, which were highly succesful in America's Can-Am racing league in the late 1960s.

During Chaparral's Can-Am sports car programme, Jim Hall was able to secure extensive technical support from Chevrolet's R&D department. Since Chevrolet has been owned by General Motors since 1918, this explains why the 2X Concept project is being primarily overseen by GM Design.
