The Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo concept car has been revealed in full at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show.

Showcased as a full size mock-up at Chevrolet's show stand, the Chaparral 2X is described by its makers at GM Design as "an audacious and ambitious vision" that "inherits the spirit of revolution" that made Chaparral such a respected name in motorsports during the 1950s and 1960s.

Highlighting this innovation is the 2X's powertrain: instead of a conventional internal combustion engine, the Chaparral is propelled by an air-powered laser system that produces the equivalent of 900 brake horsepower. Combined with the car's extremely low (yet unspecified) weight, this gives the car staggering claimed performance: 0-60mph takes just 1.5 seconds, and the top speed is said to be in excess of 230mph.

Onother interesting attribute of the Chaparral is its peculiar driving position that's inspired by a wingsuit. The driver lays down completely flat, with the limbs positioned to point towards the four corners of the car. It's unknown how the driver will be able to steering the 2X through this way, though the unusual cockpit design does require the guages to be projected inside the driver's helmet.

Being so advanced in its ambition, the Chaparral 2X was also a challenge to simulate in Gran Turismo 6. For instance, because no other car has featured a laser-based propulsion system, the development team at Polyphony Digital had to develop the car's physics from scratch, instead of relying on the data collected from every other car that's been featured in a Gran Turismo game.

There's currently no word on when the Chaparral will be brought to Gran Turismo 6, other than it'll feature in an update scheduled for "the holiday season". Attendants of the Los Angeles Auto Show, however, will be able to drive the 2X Vision Gran Turismo in GT6 via gaming pods located at the Chevrolet stand.
