Game: Carmageddon Max Damage

Platform: PC, PS4, XBox One

Publisher: Stainless Games

Release Date: 08/07/2016

It's been nearly 20 years since Carmageddon smashed onto the original PlayStation, but now the controversial car combat series is making a comeback on consoles with the release of Carmageddon Max Damage on PS4 and Xbox One in mid 2016 as a digital download, announced today by original developer Stainless Games. Stainless Games has since confirmed that Carmageddon Max Damage will also be available on PC, where it will be free for those who already own Carmageddon Reincarnation.

Like the original game, which was based on the cult film Death Race 2000 but the developers couldn't acquire the license, Carmageddon Max Damage will once again have you mowing down hapless pedestrians for points in free-for all races. Yes, this stuff was actually edgy once upon a time.

Over 30 killer cars will feature including some old favourites from the series such as Max Damage's iconic Eagle R, along with 10 environments including large open worlds and battle arenas from cities to deserts and ice wastelands.

Three modes will be available in Carmageddon Max Damage: you can rise the ranks in the career mode, satisfy your appetite for destruction in Freeplay or engage in some multiplayer havoc.

Pedestrian targets will take many forms too: you'll be running over nuns, bikini babes, cyclists and mobility scooter-riding pensioners among others. Tasteful.

Of course it wouldn't be a Carmageddon game without some crazy powerups, and Carmageddon Max Damage doesn't disappoint, featuring no less than 90 powerups to destroy your rivals in inventive ways.

Carmageddon Max Damage follows the release of the PC-only Carmageddon Reincarnation, which finished its stint on Steam Early Access last year. The only problem was that nobody could really play it as it was woefully unoptimised, so making the series accessible on consoles is a welcome move, particularly as the PS4 and Xbox One are lacking in car combat games. In the absence of Twisted Metal, Carmageddon Max Damage could be a viable alternative when it releases in mid 2016.
