BugBear has cancelled their Kickstarter campaign for Next Car Game after it failed to generate enough funding – with just over a week to go until the campaign was scheduled to finish, BugBear raised $81,772 since it started on November 1st, falling way short of its lofty $350,000 target.

"Although our Kickstarter campaign has attracted tremendous enthusiasm, during the last couple of weeks it’s become obvious that we are not going to meet our goal. Because of this we have decided concentrate our efforts on the pre-order campaign. A big thank you to all our supporters!" BugBear stated in a press release.

"We Finns are not used to giving up so easily, and we are hell-bent to keep on developing the game with our supporters, shaping it into something that no racing game fan can afford to pass. We have this thing called sisu in Finnish, meaning strength of will, and we’re counting on that each of you have a bit ofsisu in you!"

Funding is now once again being sourced by website pre-orders at www.nextcargame.com. Starting from a special offer of $25, all the perks found in the Kickstarter campaign have been retained. Next Car Game will then be released on Steam Early Access, allowing them to sell alpha and beta versions to gain extra funding and give players a chance to sample the game ahead of its release.

There is some consolation, however: as a thank you to their supporters, BugBear have released a sneak peek technology demo of Next Car Game, available to download right now if you pre-order the game. It's the very same demo BugBear have previously showcased, set in a minimalist open playground where you can test the highly-touted soft body damage deformation by smashing into up to 24 AI cars, obliterate track-side scenery and even drive through an active car crusher –  watch as your previously pristine car gets turned into mangled metal.

While Next Car Game may not have been as successful on Kickstarter as BugBear had hoped, it garnered considerable attention on Steam Greenlight and was approved in just 13 days. They certainly have every right to gloat after publishers rejected Next Car Game, proclaiming that there was no longer a demand for banger racing games.

Despite the Kickstarter campaign being unsuccessful, Next Car Game will still be released on PC next year regardless. Unfortunately however, the fate of the proposed next-gen PS4 and Xbox One ports are now uncertain. Beyond the initial $350,00 funding target, BugBear placed several stretch goals in the original Kickstarter – the highest target of $1.4 million would secure a PS4 and Xbox One port.
