The British sports car manufacturer Aston Martin will return to F1 as early as next year, according to a report by Autocar magazine.

As stated in the article, Aston Martin will likely do this through being a title sponsor of Red Bull Racing, replacing current partner Infiniti (a premium Japanese car manufacturer with close ties to Renault).

It's likely this will permit the Milton Keynes-based outfit to ditch the Renault powertrain, in favour of the superior system from Mercedes-Benz (roughly 5% of Aston Martin is owned by Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz).

The Autocar piece also revealed the plans to sponsor Red Bull Racing have at least partly come about through current Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer's former role as Chairman of Infiniti.

However, it's worth pointing out that Red Bull Racing's contract with Renault doesn't expire until the end of the 2016 season. The potential threat of a rejuvenated Red Bull Racing to the Mercedes-Benz AMG F1 team is also something Mercedes-Benz needs to consider.

Should Aston Martin indeed become a sponsor for Red Bull Racing, it will be the first time the Aston Martin brand has participated in Formula One since 1960, albeit this time not as a chassis constructor (Aston Martin previously competed in 1959 and 1960, then pulled out after failing to secure a single points-scoring finish).
