You may not realise it, but today is a special day for Top Gear. Because, believe it or not, it was in fact ten years ago today that Top Gear returned to the telly after being axed by the BBC following falling ratings. Little did they know back then that it would become a global phenomenon with a worldwide audience of over 350 million.

It's therefore a travesty that Top Gear will miss its usual Winter slot this year for its tenth birthday. While a new series is currently scheduled to return next year, Christmas simply isn't the same without watching the trio's latest automotive calamities  Still, you can always rely on the traditional tatty Top Gear Christmas DVD I suppose, which always comes in handy to drown out the Queen's speech with the sound of horsepower. Suffice to say, it subsequently gets reduced to about a third of its original price as soon as Boxing Day looms.

Do not despair, however, as a televised Top Gear special has now been confirmed for the end of this month to help ease the pain of our enduring withdrawal. But before you get too excited, It won't be a traditional Top Gear special with all three bumbling presenters.

To mark James Bond's 50th anniversary, Richard Hammond will be hosting a one-off documentary that pays tribute to the series' history of gadget-laden cars that have become a hallmark of the series over the years. Guy Hamilton, who directed Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die and The Man With The Golden Gun, is said to make an appearance to provide further insight, along with Roger Moore and Daniel Craig fresh from the set of Skyfall.

And in case you were thinking it all sounds a bit too serious for their standards, Top Gear's tomfoolery hasn't been compromised. After all, Top Gear wouldn't be Top Gear without some sort of challenge involving something 'ambitious but rubbish', and the trailer posted above provides a glimpse of their latest endeavor in which they attempt of make a botched Bond car.

Their car of choice? A fully-functioning underwater Lotus. Not too audacious, then.

Of course, ambitious amphibious cars are nothing new to Top Gear, but this looks to take it to another level. We can't wait to see the end result and the collateral damage that will inevitably accompany it.

It's also interesting to note that this isn't the first time the team have attempted to make a budget Bond car. Back in series 1, a rusty Rover 800 was fitted with a plethora of high-tech gadgets essential for every aspiring double 0 agent, including a bullet-proof tea tray, front-mounted paintball guns and even an ejector seat. You can see for yourself how it all panned out below:

50 years of Bond Cars: a Top Gear special will air on October 29th in the UK. For everyone else, it will shortly arrive on a torrent site near you.
