Fans of strategy games rejoice as 2K and Fireaxis have announced today that a new Civilization title, Civilization VI will be launching later this year.

The critically acclaimed Sid Meier-created franchise will be entering its sixth entry to the main game franchise and marks the first numbered sequel since 2010.

The team behind the new title are promising fans a familiar experience that builds on the foundation of its previous titles, while still being accessible for those new to the franchise. Ed Beach, Fireaxis Games Lead Designer states that the game “…builds on the firm foundation of the Civilization franchise, and we’ve added many exciting new elements,” indicating an approach of innovation, not revolution.

It’s seems like a sensible balance to strike. To date, the Civilization games have sold over 30 million copies globally and Civilization V was received well critically and by fans.

Whilst the full details of Civilization Vi new features haven’t been fully revealed, Publisher Take Two has revealed some of the key features have been announced. Cities will for the first time be able to expand across multiple section of the game map rather than just take up a single tile. There is also greater emphasis on where a city is placed in terms of speed or ability to research of certain technologies.

From looking at the screenshots released the game engine seems to have been updated. Civilization VI boasts a new visual aesthetic with a brighter pallet than its predecessors.

The accompanying trailer doesn’t give us much of an indication of what to expect from the game but Sean Bean's narration gives it a very big screen feel.

·         EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before. Each city spans multiple tiles so you can custom build your cities to take full advantage of the local terrain;

·         ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures;

·         DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game, from primitive first interactions where conflict is a fact of life, to late game alliances and negotiations;

·         COMBINED ARMS: Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units;

·         ENHANCED MULTIPLAYER: In addition to traditional multiplayer modes, cooperate and compete with your friends in a wide variety of situations all designed to be easily completed in a single session;

·         A CIV FOR ALL PLAYERS: Civilization VI provides veteran players new ways to build and tune their civilization for the greatest chance of success. New tutorial systems are designed to introduce new players to the underlying concepts of Civilization so they can easily get started on a path to victory.
